Finisher ’Heaven Or Las Vegas’ may be not so extravangant but makes a transition from faux-opera beginnings to a sultry dub reggae/soft-rock hybrid. After a couple of spins what originally seems jarring, comes off as a successful experiment. Opener ’Life Of The Party’ is Tesfay’s most exhibitionistic statement to date, with creeping marching percussion leading the way for the hard-hitting combination of heavy electric guitar and blary synths that arrive in unison to usher in a big stark chorus. As a result of all eyes being firmly on him, Tesfay is more confident in his abilities and therefore more ambitious and experimental in the way he approaches his music.Įager to showcase this, the most leftfield tracks bookend this mixtape. Not a mere extension nor a complete departure, Thursday is more Tesfay reacting to the copious amounts of internet love that’s been showered upon him during these past months.

This short widespread musical appreciation being at an all time high last Thursday when his site crashed, due to the amount of people The Weeknd releases second mixtape" href="" class="ext-link" rel="external" target="_blank">clamouring to download his then just-released new mixtape/album Thursday.Īlthough lyrically Thursday treads along the same boards (the hedonistic highs and emotional lows of love are again the main topic here), musically this isn’t House Of Ballons MK II. And considering the rave reviews his recent live debut received neither has the hype surrounding him. It’s yet another labor of love from The Weeknd, and it does not disappoint. For someone who spent so much time making people guess about who and what The Weeknd was and is, Abel Tesfay seems to have done a 180 in turns of mystique, and hasn’t really left the minds of bloggers, new-music lovers and hipsters alike since he released his debut mixtape House Of Ballonsback in March.

Thursday is, yet again, more than a free mixtape. The music is busier, giving Tesfaye less space, but it sounds more like part of an overall evolution than a mistake. In the moment, the album is still a gut wrenching story of a desperate, broken man. Thursday doesn’t nearly live up to the shocking quality of its predecessor, but it hardly matters. Heaven or Las Vegas finds his world crashing down around him again, just as it did on Balloons closer The Knowing. He’s just abusing his body until he can’t feel anymore, a situation he continually encounters. The song barely moves forward, but then again, neither does his mood. Rolling Stone, like The Zone, gives him room to tell his story. His skill as a vocalist is still incredible, and he sings every note with believable conviction. I is musically busy, and he simply repeats “don’t make me make you fall in love with a ni** er like me”, but does it with great effect. Tesfaye still manages to expertly control the mood of the album even with the decreased space to move about in. The musical side of Thursday is more intriguing, but it takes a slight toll on the emotional impact of the record. That same track is also one of the few songs that focus on Tesfaye’s vocals and lyrics as much as Balloons did. The two of them propel each other to greater heights than they’ve reached before. Drake makes an excellent appearance here as well. The Zone is the first truly heartbreaking song of the record, with Tesfaye telling the girl he’s with “I’ll be making love to her through you/so let me keep my eyes closed”. He knew his lifestyle would catch him, and it has. Life of the Party and Thursday continue in the same desperate vein, wandering through a drugged haze that he’s failed to pull himself from.

It’s not the same cocksure Abel Tesfaye that, through all the depression and emptiness, confidently took girls back to his two floor loft in the middle of the city. Opener Lonely Star sounds like a pathetic plea for the girl of his affections on that particular evening to sleep with him, offering her fame and jewels. He was left empty and shallow on his previous album, and his characters confidence has been shattered. Thursday, The Weeknd’s follow-up and sequel to his ridiculously good House of Balloons, begins desperately.
